If you’re a fan of One Piece, then you know how iconic Portgas D. Ace is — that confident grin, that fiery personality, and his signature hat!
This step-by-step tutorial will teach you how to draw Portgas D. Ace, the brother of Luffy and one of the most legendary pirates in One Piece.

How to draw Portgas D. Ace from One Piece – A Step by Step Guide
1. Ace One Piece Drawing
Step 1 — Lightly draw a long curved line across the page for the hat brim
Just under that line, sketch two small almond-shaped eyes slightly narrowed — Ace often looks calm/serious.

Step 2 — From the eye line, draw a short vertical guideline down the center of the face to place nose and mouth.
Add a straight, small mouth and a faint suggestion of the nose between eyes and mouth.

Step 3 — Lightly sketch the jawline: two soft lines angling down from below each eye to form the lower face.
Refine the jaw into a clear chin and add two lines downward to form the neck.

Step 4 — Block in the rough hair silhouette beneath the hat brim — short, jagged tufts that frame the face.
Define individual hair clumps with jagged strokes; give Ace the slightly messy, layered hair.
Add the ear on one side and a few stray bangs falling just beneath the hat brim.
Clean the face lines so the eyes, nose and mouth read clearly.

Step 5 — Sketch Ace’s beaded necklace: draw a row of round beads that sit on the collarbone area.
Refine the hairline where it meets the neck and collar.

Step 6 — Draw the full hat dome above the brim; keep it rounded and slightly floppy.
Add the hat’s goggle band across the front of the hat: two round lenses connected by a strap.
Refine the brim thickness so the hat looks three-dimensional.

Step 7 — Add goggle details and any hat pattern.
Darken the eyes, add lashes/crease lines above lids, and add small eyebrow marks showing expression.

Step 8 — Fill large dark areas and add shading under the brim, beneath the chin, and between neck and collar to create depth.
Add texture to the beads , hat rim shadows, and light cross-hatching on the clothing for volume.

2. How to Draw Portgas D. Ace Face
Step 1 — Lightly sketch the mouth first: a wide grin with visible upper teeth and a strong curve for the lower lip.
Draw the eyes above the mouth: narrow, angled lids that give a confident, slightly mischievous expression.
These two elements set the character and attitude — place them roughly centered on the page with good vertical spacing.

Step 2 — From the mouth and eyes, draw the jawline and cheek shapes: make the jaw slightly narrow and the cheeks subtly curved.
Block in the rough hair silhouette around the sides of the face using jagged, outward strokes.
Refine the corners of the mouth and the crease lines around the eyes to strengthen the expression.

Step 3 — Define individual hair clumps with sharper, varied strokes so the hair reads layered and textured.
Add an ear at the correct level and a hint of the sideburns.
Clean up the facial lines: darken the eyelids, add small lines for the nose bridge and smile creases.

Step 4 — Sketch the neck lines down from the jaw, then draw the top of his collar.
Add the beaded necklace: draw a curve of round beads laying across the collarbone area. Keep bead sizes consistent and follow the body’s curve.
Continue refining hair around the nape so it flows into the collar area naturally.

Step 5 — Draw the full hat dome above the brim .
Sketch the goggle band across the hat: two round goggle lenses connected by a strap. Place them centered on the hat front and add small rim details.
Refine the brim thickness so the hat sits three-dimensionally above the eyes.

Step 6 — Add the fur collar with layered, jagged clumps that overlap the shoulders; use short strokes to imply fluffiness.
Draw the rest of the collar seams and any visible fabric folds beneath the necklace.
Finish smaller facial details like freckles, tooth lines, and any faint shadow lines near the cheek.

Step 7 — Fill in solid blacks and add cross-hatching or smooth shading under the brim, beneath the chin, inside the collar, and on the fur to create depth.
